If you are worried about money or debt there are some simple actions you can follow to prevent things getting worse, and a range of agencies locally and nationally who can help.
Remember:
- Don’t ignore the problem
- Arrange for a benefits check – if you receive the state pension you may be entitled to additional payments such as Pension Credit or Attendance Allowance
- Check all your options before you borrow money to pay debts
- Pay your priority debts first (rent, mortgage, council tax, gas / electricity)
- Contact everyone you owe and try to arrange to pay a smaller amount that you can afford
- Keep copies of letters or forms you fill in or receive
