We are all aware of the high cost of gas and electricity – an issue that seems to affect older people more than most because of limited incomes, the time spent at home, and the potential for health problems which make us feel the cold!
Here are some tips for helping to reduce the amount of fuel we use, and therefore save money:
- Turn your thermostat down by 1°C and you could save around £50 per year
- Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through windows
- Turn lights off when you leave a room
- Only boil as much water as you need
- Use energy saving lightbulbs (each can save you around £45 over the lifetime of the bulb)
- Stop heat escaping with loft and cavity wall insulation
There are also agencies who can help you reduce your energy bills by providing grants, benefits, or payment shemes as weel as advice on insulation.
