Extra Care Housing – A Guide for Residents

What is Extra Care Housing?

Extra Care Housing is similar to sheltered accommodation—it provides you with choice and control plus the added elements of on-site care,  security and social or leisure activities. In Knowsley, there are a range of self-contained, one and two bed spacious apartments designed to meet the needs of older people (generally from age 55 years and over).

Each scheme has a range of on-site communal facilities as well as organised group excursions. You have the option of privacy as well as a chance to meet and socialise with neighbours. A Scheme Manager and fully trained care staff are based on-site and they can respond to emergencies 24 hours a day.

Who can apply?

Anyone living in the borough can apply, whether you live in your own home or are renting. Apartments are prioritised according to people’s combined housing and care needs.

What are the benefits?

Extra care housing offers:

  • Independent living, but with varying levels of care and support available on-site—24 hours a day.
  • A secure tenancy and retaining your own home.
  • A safe and secure living environment.
  • Easy/level access throughout your home
  • Family and friends able to visit and support as usual

Can I afford it?

There are three element of Extra Care Housing:

  • The cost of renting or purchasing your home
  • The landlord service charge
  • Your care and support costs, if required and subject to Knowsley Council’s Fairer Charging Policy.

Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify for Housing Benefit to meet all or part of the costs of your rent and service charge. You may also be entitled to exemption from Council Tax.
