Breaks for Carers

One of the key aspects of Knowsley’s Carers Strategy ‘A Life of My Own’ is the recognition of carers being given the chance for regular breaks.

A break can be any activity that gives time away from their caring responsibilities, rx in any location that they choose. This can be time for themselves, with the person they care for, with family or friends.

The Carers Personalised Break Fund can help provide funding for time away from the physical, practical and emotional part of caring. This can be anything from 1 hour to several weeks to give time to rest, or a chance to experience new things. The scheme can provide funding for services or products up to the value of £350, and carers can make one application within each 12 month period.

There are many ways that the fund can be used to provide a break, and carers are encouraged to be flexible and imaginative on how they reach there desired outcome.

Examples may include:

  • The costs associated with the carer taking a break. e.g. Accommodation, meals and transport costs.
  • The costs associated with someone taking the cared for person away somewhere whilst the carer stays at home.
  • For services such as gardening, decorating or cleaning where the carer has not been able to carry out these tasks due to their caring role.
  • Music lessons, gym membership, cinema pass, a weekend break, hotel vouchers, a relaxing massage, pamper sessions, equipment to follow a hobby, dancing lessons, football tickets, art classes, driving lessons, training courses, a laptop, theatre tickets etc.

Carers can receive support with their application from a number of local agencies including officers from Knowsley Older People’s Voice and Age UK Knowsley & West Mersey.
